Real World People

I’m a guy who loves a great conversation. As I walk, longboard and Uber myself around town, I occasionally find myself stopping to strike up conversations with those around me. I’ve met quite an eclectic bunch of people in my short time in the post-college real world, but most of the people that I meet seem to fit into a few different groups.

The workaholic: We all know these people. The ones who work 70 to 80 hours a week and haven’t taken a vacation in six years. I’m always happy to provide a 10-minute reprieve from people’s incredibly hectic lives. They usually take at least 15 to tell me how busy they are.

The guy or gal tethered to the smartphone: This person hasn’t left digital land since the advent of the smartphone. I try to get these people to look up at me to have a casual conversation. My track record is rather spotty.

The oversharer: You say “good afternoon”, and the next thing you know, you’re discussing their most recent colonoscopy. You won’t believe all the stories on divorces, bankruptcies, medical issues and family drama I’ve heard in my time.

The Negative Nancy: No time for these people … I quickly say goodbye, and I’m back on my longboard.

The loner: These people fall into two categories. There are the loners who enjoy being loners. And there are the ones who really need someone to chat with. I love talking with the latter; I find that by reaching out, you can really make their day.

The bragger: Of course you’ve climbed Mount Everest three times, dated a supermodel and have dined regularly with Obama. Sometimes it’s best to just play along with these people with a smile on your face.

The generally happy, inspiring person: This person is by far my favorite. He is always making the best of life and always has motivating things to say, and their happiness ends up spreading like a virus. I’d like to see this person on a daily basis.

Are you one of those people? Probably. But no matter which type you are, know that I'll always have the energy to chat with you as long as I’ve had my cup of coffee.
